When death occurs
Deaths at home or deaths outside a hospital or institution
Under normal circumstances, a doctor is called to fill out a death certificate. In cases where there is uncertainty about the cause of death or suspicion of a criminal act, the police must also be called. After the death, relatives must contact the funeral home they wish to use. Once a doctor has confirmed the death, we as an agency collect the deceased, either on a stretcher or with a coffin that has been agreed upon with the relatives. The deceased is then transported to the ceremony site or the nearest chapel. If the police have been called, they arrange further transport to the hospital. If anyone wishes to see the deceased before the day of the ceremony, we make an appointment for this.
Death in a hospital or institution
If relatives are not present when the death occurs, the staff will notify the relatives. The staff will also arrange for a death certificate with a doctor. They will also ask the relatives to contact a funeral home. It is recommended to do this within the first 24 hours, but it is not necessary to call immediately. Please take some time to gather yourself before contacting them. Relatives will be given the opportunity to see the deceased in the room. If someone wishes to see the deceased at a later time, we will make an appointment for a funeral.
Deaths abroad
Contact us on tel. 51 97 29 00 if the death occurs abroad, and we will assist and guide you through the process. Contact must be made with the deceased's insurance company and the nearest Norwegian embassy or consulate, or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Norway. If the deceased had travel insurance, the insurance company will arrange and cover the costs of repatriation.
