Different types of ceremonies
One of the first questions you need to decide is whether the deceased will be buried in a coffin or cremated. If it is a coffin burial, the ceremony will first take place inside the ceremony room before the funeral procession goes out and joins as the coffin when it is lowered into the grave.
If the deceased is to be cremated, the ceremony takes place indoors and then the coffin is usually carried out to the funeral car, which then drives it to the crematorium. The agency will agree beforehand when and how the urn will be placed, and relatives can choose whether they want to be present or have it placed in silence. It is also possible to apply to the state administrator for the scattering of ashes or have the cremation take place before the ceremony. In this case, we often call it an urn ceremony.
Religious, humanistic or open-minded ceremony?
Church ceremony:
A church ceremony is held in a church or chapel and is under the auspices of the Church of Norway. The ceremony is led by a priest and follows the order of the Church of Norway. In addition to memorial words, it will include hymns, scripture readings, speeches, prayers, and the laying of the dead, as well as personal contributions and self-written memorial words.
Humanistic ceremony:
A humanistic ceremony is held under the auspices of the Human-Ethical Association. One of their ceremony leaders will lead the ceremony, which will commemorate the deceased on a humanistic basis and will be without religious elements. The ceremony includes a memorial speech and usually some music and preferably a poem or memorial from the family.
Life-view-opening ceremony:
In a life-affirming ceremony, the relatives are free to choose both the content of the ceremony and who will lead it. As an agency, we are able to help you with this, and the ceremony can have both a religious and non-religious content, including musical performances, poems, and memorial speeches. Life-affirming ceremonies take place in a life-affirming chapel or ceremony room.
